CT Man Kills Himself After Home Invasion, Theft, and Shoot-Out With State Police

A Connecticut man who was a suspect in an alleged home invasion died after allegedly shooting himself several times during a shoot-out with state police.

The incident took place in Windham County around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2 in Windham.

According to the Connecticut State Police, troopers responded to a larceny in the area of 338 Windham Center Center Road in Windham.

The suspect was seen fleeing in a box truck. Manchester Police notified state police that a suspect involved in a home invasion in their city was possibly located in Windham, state police said. 

During the home invasion at 197 Oakland St., a man entered the home and held an occupant of the home against their will, said Manchester Police Chief William Darby.

Darby said the owner of the home returned to the residence and observed what was occurring inside. The owner fled the residence as the suspect chased after her. The owner was able to hide in a nearby residence.

The suspect fled the area in a box truck which was later found and the suspect had fled on foot, state police said.

Troopers responded to the area of 605 Jerusalem Road, Windham, and were attempting to make contact with the homeowner when the suspect fled the residence into the wood line. 

State police said troopers pursued the suspect on foot. During the foot chase, the suspect fired multiple rounds at responding troopers. 

As the troopers approached the suspect, the suspect had self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Lifesaving efforts were attempted and were unsuccessful. The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene, state police said.

The suspect was identified as Rye Shashok, age 46, of Chaplin in Windham County.

Troopers confirmed that Shashok was also the suspect in the Manchester home invasion, state police said.

Central District Major Crimes Squad has assumed this investigation. 

There were no reported injuries to troopers involved on the scene.
